Historic and Natural Districts Inventory Form

Unless indicated below, this is a transcript of the original Society for the Preservation of Long Island Antiquities/Town of Brookhaven survey form. Corrections to obvious typographical and spelling errors have been made. Corrections to factual errors, updates or comments on the information are either enclosed in [square brackets], or will be clearly indicated as updated material. Since most of the surveys were conducted in the late 1970’s and early 1980’s, much of the information reflects that time period.

Sites with an Inventory Code suffix of “S” are supplemental sites not included in the original surveys.

3-Description

Walter Gould purchased the boatyard in 1970 from John E. Strickland, still (2011) a commissioner with the Brookhaven FD. In 1978 Walter moved their house, Ruth's childhood house, from the SW corner of Edgar Ave and Oak Street to River Lane and put it up on pilings. The boatyard initially was to belong to all homeowners in the August Starke 22-acre development; however, this arrangement did not materialize.

With the assistance of the Foundation the Fireplace Boat Basin has been restored. For the last several decades the marina was patched together and had fallen into some disrepair. It now continues to be a special place for boat owners to keep their boats in a safe and well-managed facility.

The Fireplace Boat Basin is operated by the Carmans River Maritime Center, which leases out spaces to local residents. One of the special features in the newly renovated marina is the low bulkheading that creates a wetland area under the boardwalk on the south side of the marina.

Post-Morrow currently owns the Fireplace Boat Basin (sometimes referred to as Gould‟s Marina). This marina has been in operation since the 1940's for summer dockage of approximately 39 boats and is affiliated with prior shipbuilding at this location. The Basin is operated by the Carmans River Maritime Center, which leases out spaces to local residents, and which utilizes earth-friendly marina best management practices. With the assistance of the Foundation, the Basin was recently renovated with a new low sill bulkhead and creation of an associated low marsh wetland area beneath the boardwalk on the south side of the marina.
