- [I am not entirely certain that this is the Samual Hawkins who lived in this residence. Armbrusterin, in his short paragraph on this home in his 1925 touring pamphlet, indicates "Samual Hawkins came from New York to this place over a century ago (eg, about 1825) and purchased this property," I have found no evidence that this Samuel every lived in New York City. Stephanie Bigelow records that this Samuel lived on Beaverdam Road in Fire Place (now Brookhaven), near his brother Daniel. I have not found any other likely Samuel Hawkins candidate for this house, however.]

South Haven (Presbyterian Church), Brookhaven, Suffolk, NY [8] |
a Presbyteian |
- On 28 December 1828, he was recorded as purchasing, with Selah Hawkins, pew no. 14* for $10. This purchase allowed the use of the pew for his lifetime. Pew 14 was the second pew from the front in the center section. Samuel and Selah were third cousins.
On 31 Oct 1836 he was elected and ordained as an Elder and a Deacon
* Borthwick's assignment of pews is based on the arrangement of the pews in 1930 (and present). Yet, he reports that the interior of the church was rearranged at some point which placed the pulpit at the opposite end of the meeting house. Whether the pews were arranged in the same way then as now is problematical.
