proprietor of the "Brook Store,' with her son Thomas, |
- After the death of her husband, Robert, in 1813, Elizabeth established a store "in the old building in order to earn a living" (Morse). Morse's context suggests that the "old building" was the South Haven Presbyterian Parish's parsonage, although Bigelow indicates "the parsonage itself was further east beyond the railroad overpass."
However, according to Edna Valentine Bruce, "the original building was never a parsonage but always a store and tavern. The parsonage or 'Pasnage Living' was to the north of the [present] Railroad Bridge on the east side of Montauk Highway [South Country Rd.]. The confusion results from the fact that Robert Ellison owned both the parsonage and the land where he built his house and store [on the west side of South Country Rd. near to the crossing of Beaverdam Creek.]"
