- Jacob L. Valentine, in a affidavit found in his pension file, states: "I have known Stephen J. Swezey for over twenty years And I have known him to be a strictly temperate man all those years. In the early part of my acquaintance with him he seemed to be what I call queer or a little off at times, during the later years it seemed to increase on him until he seemed incapable of anything but roaming the streets. And finally at the instigation of his brother he was taken to the County House at Yaphank, New York where he died." He was admitted to the Alms House on 2 February 1895.
