Name |
Nathaniel Miller |
Prefix |
Dr. |
Suffix |
Sr. ^ [g. 7] |
Birth |
17 Apr 1784 |
{Springs, East Hampton, Suffolk, NY} [3, 4, 5, 6, 7] |
- His gravestone indicates 17 Apr 1784. Some authorities give his birth year as 1783. [While some sources gave his birth place as Shelter Island, Suffolk, NY, without attribution, I am highly suspicious of this claim. In 1790, his father was living in East Hampton, NY; I have not found any independent evidence to suggest that the family was living earlier in the Town of Shelter Island.]

Living |
Bef 1813 |
Springs, East Hampton, Suffolk, NY [8] |
There is evidence that Nathaniel's grandfather, Timothy Miller, and his uncle, David, owned land in Fire Place prior to Nathaniel's arrival. See Timothy Miller. His father, Elisha, may have been born on the older homestead although the evidence suggests that he later removed to Springs, East Hampton, Suffolk, NY. This earlier residency of the Miller family has not yet been proved (Dec 2003).

1820 |
Fire Place (now Brookhaven), Brookhaven, Suffolk, NY [14] |
- [While the top part of the census page indicates Shelter Island, it's clear that the bottom half of the page is Fire Place based on the surrounding names. The household contained, in 1820, one male under 10 years of age (no doubt Nathaniel, Jr.), one male 26-45 (no doubt Nathaniel), two females under 10 years of age (Caroline and Mary), one female 10-15 (?), and one female 26-44 (no doubt Sarah).]

1828 |
South Haven (Presbyterian Church), Brookhaven, Suffolk, NY [15] |
a Presbyterian |
- In 1828, he was a trustee; in 1840, he was clerk (secretary) of the trustees. In 1828 he purchased a pew for $25. This purchased entitled his family and heirs to use the pew "forever." In 1884 he contributed to a fund of $75 to purchased back pews that were "made free for the use of any and every person that would attend religious service in the Meeting House," but his pew was not listed among them. Some families claimed their hereditary rights to their pews as late as 1889.
