Building-Structure Inventory Form

Return to Sites Table of Contents

Unless indicated below, this is a transcript of the original Society for the Preservation of Long Island Antiquities/Town of Brookhaven survey form. Since most of the surveys were conducted in the late 1970’s and early 1980’s, much of the information reflects that time period.

Corrections to obvious typographical and spelling errors have been made. Corrections to factual errors in the original surveys, and updates or comments on the information are either enclosed in [square brackets], or are clearly indicated as updated material from the context of the comments.

Sites which have a suffix of “S” are supplemental sites not included in the original surveys.

c. 1902 [probably c. 1836. See supplemental material]

[Perhaps Bartlett Tutthill Hawkins. See supplemental material]

Historic and Architectural Importance

1 1/2 story, 3 bay, side entrance plan, shingle style, gable roof cottage with roof extending over front porch. Sawtooth shingle detail at window sill level and window head level, at both floors, and in the gables. Flaring shingles over paired windows on east and west facades. Interesting shingle detail at all roof edges. Porch with turned posts and original "Chinese" railing.

Base of water tower behind house with same shingle detail.

Supplemental Material

[* The original Building-Structure Inventory form, dated 17 July 1982, indicates that this was built in 1902. The 1873 Beers Map and the 1858 Chase Map indicates a home identified as "B.T. Hawkins" at this location. Photographs dated 1915 annotated by Clara (Clarissa) Hawkins as "The old South Haven home" are clearly of this house. Clarissa was a daughter of Bartlett Tuthill (B.T.) Hawkins and a sister of Erastus Corning Hawkins. It therefore seems likely that this house was built before 1858, Since Bartlett Hawkins married his first wife in 1836, it is likely that the house was built about then.]
