Brookhaven Hamlet Train Station about 1900. The station was on the north side of the tracks near to the intersection of Old Stump Rd. and Bridge Pl. (both streets were, at one time or another, a.k.a. Railroad Street/Ave.) The Brookhaven Depot was built in 1884, it's agency closed in 1932. The building was remodeled in 1944, and the station was closed as a station stop on 6 Oct 1958, the same year as East Moriches' and many others.

Thought to be the first day trains came through the East River tunnels direct from Pennsylvania Station. Prior to that time, passengers from Long Island had to transfer to a ferry at Long Island City to get to Manhattan. The engines through the tunnels were electric; it was typical at that time to have an engine switch to steam at Jamaica, as opposed to the norm today where the passengers switch trains.

"Three nearly-identical station buildings were erected in 1884 and one in 1886 with a common striking decorative element -- a trefoil screen in the eaves of the main roof. The trio of depots -- Brookhaven, Deer Park and Central Park (later Bethpage) -- mounted these gothic design elements within a triangular framework, featuring a downward-pointing arrowhead centered beneath." While this photograph is of the Central Park trefoil screen, it is identical to the one at Brookhaven.

"Like some of the hapless Main Line stations, Brookhaven was singled out for 'remuddling' in 1944 and stripped of all decoration and with the only remaining section of canopy covering just the bay window and the doorway."

This photograph is from the Patchogue Advance, 25 Sep 1958, and accompanied an article on the closing of the Eastport, East Moriches and Brookhaven Stations. It is a scanned image of a photocopy print of the microfilmed archive of the Advance at the Patchogue public library -- hence it's poor quality.
This is the last known picture of the passenger station. While not clear from this image, the windows and doors have been boarded over, suggesting that near the end of its life it was not being occupied, although the station stop was still in use.

The Brookhaven Hamlet Freight Depot. According to the the 1888 map of Brookhaven Hamlet, the "Freight House" originally stood on the southeast corner of Old Stump Rd. (then called Railroad Ave.) and the railroad tracks.
This building was purchased and moved to the old Lefkowicz Duck farm on Old Stump Rd., sometime in the early 1970's. Later it was purchased by Ron Bush, a real estate broker in Patchogue who also owned a family farm in Holtsville. He later moved the building to his private museum at the old Robinson farm in South Haven, where he is doing preservation and restoration work.

It is known that this structure was moved from the Brookhaven Long Island Rail Road station site. Some sources believe that it is the actual passenger depot. Others suggest that is was an auxiliary structure. It is now used as a work shop and storage shed at the Miller residence on Burnett Lane, being moved their about 1959.
Comparison with the historic pictures of the passenger depot suggests that it is not the same structure as the passenger depot.
