In the lower left is the Wertheim National Wildlife Refuge headquarters complex. The island at the center is known as Wyandott (native American for "island.") More specifically it is their name for the turtle's back which is part of their foundation myth. The narrow waterway between island and upland is known as the Wyandott waterway or gap. There used to be a shack (probably a smoke house) on the island in the 1950s. Land on both sides of the river is within the Wertheim National Wildlife Refuge.
This photograph was taken by Marty Van Lith during a helicopter flyover as part of the filming of the film: The Carman's River Story.

At the top right is the Great South Bay. Just upstream on the west bank is Squassux Landing, the Brookhaven Hamlet's community owned marina.
Just a bit further upstream is a small creek known as Little Neck Run. This stream has often been used to separate the Brookhaven and South Haven hamlets
The larger stream emptying into the Carman's River at the lower left is Yaphank Creek.
This picture is just a small distance downstream from the previous picture. 02-08-2011 12:00:00
A new headquarters building and visitors center is being built on the east side of the river near the entrance roadway off of River road in Shirley. This building is expected to be completed in 2011, and the future status of this site is uncertain.
