“Our Phil” was one of several of Katherine’s short stories that appeared in The Atlantic Monthly. This story published in November of 1869 paints a picture of plantation life in which Kate grew up in at the Floyd Estate in Mastic. Although a work of fiction and set in Maryland, the character Phil may of been named for a slave that was once jointly owned by both the Tangier Smiths & The Floyds
