Unless indicated below, this is a transcript of the original Society for the Preservation of Long Island Antiquities/Town of Brookhaven survey form. Corrections to obvious typographical and spelling errors have been made. Corrections to factual errors, updates or comments on the information are either enclosed in [square brackets], or will be clearly indicated as updated material. Since most of the surveys were conducted in the late 1970’s and early 1980’s, much of the information reflects that time period.

Sites with an Inventory Code suffix of “S” are supplemental sites not included in the original surveys.

3-Description

Deer Run Farms (formerly Lohmann’s Farm) is an active farmstead on the better part of the former Seaman farmstead that dates to the 18th century. This farm occupies much of the "neck" which in the Colonial period was known as Tarman's Neck (se Br01.2-S). The Seaman farmstead originally included the sites designated Br09C-E. Deer Run Farms maintains a popular farmstand during the growing season.

Deer Run farm is one of a dwindling number of actively farmed sites in the Town of Brookhaven.

Other: Even though the properties incorporated into the Deer Run farm are privately owned, Suffolk County has purchased the development rights, and the sites are likely to remain agricultural for the forseeable future.

Supplemental Material

Deer Run Farm is divided into two sections. The southerly section which is about 20+ acres is owned by the Post-Morrow Foundation, Brookhaven, NY. They also own a 2 acre parcel that has the farm house on it. The northerly section of the farm is owned by the Ljundqvist family and is approximately 9 acres. Bob Nolan rents the farmland from both private owners. He has purchased a house on South Country Road which is sort of within the farm property for his son who may eventually take over the farm. Both sections have had the development rights purchased by Suffolk County, but the ownership remains private. [Tom Williams, 3 Feb 2013].
